What to Do When You Find Metal in Your Oil Filter

Finding metal particles in your oil filter can be alarming, but it’s not always a sign of engine failure. If your Toyota Camry shows signs of wear through metallic debris in the oil filter, acting quickly can prevent further damage and possibly prevent expensive repairs.

Addressing Metal Shavings and Particulates in Your Engine Oil

1. Don’t Start the Engine Again

Running the engine after discovering metal shavings can cause more internal damage by circulating contaminated oil.

2. Drain the Oil and Inspect It

Check the drained oil under good lighting to evaluate how much and what type of metal is present—fine glitter differs from large shavings.

3. Cut Open the Oil Filter

Carefully open the oil filter with a filter cutter to inspect the pleats and determine the source of the metal debris.

4. Check for Recent Engine Work

If you've had recent repairs, the metal might just be leftover particles from machining or replacement parts breaking in.

5. Perform an Oil Flush and Replace Filter

Flush the system with fresh oil and install a new oil filter to remove contaminants and monitor future buildup.

6. Schedule a Compression or Magnetic Drain Plug Test

If the problem persists, deeper diagnostics like a compression test or using a magnetic plug can reveal internal wear issues.
